This is the second one of these I’ve seen on the Long Leaf Trace in a week. However, this rattler was at least 4 feet long and well fed. He is not dead and we did not kill him.

Thank you for not harming that beautiful snake. They are not as dangerous as Elinor may think. I’m an avid mountain biker and have seen many but don’t know a single person who has been bitten except for my brother-in-law who has been bitten three times. He was bitten once by accident when he fell through a rotten log into its nest and twice by a captive snake he was keeping for venom milking. After the first bite he learned he was allergic to the antivenom so he just had to tough it out through the second two bites. Though painful, the bites left no lasting damage. He was retarded before he was bitten :-)
