Skylights are not new. They were used in ancient cultures where often there was no better alternative. They also used “light pipes”, the rich coating the sides of the pipe with gold leaf for better reflection. Check out this History of Kids site.
This particular skylight is over the common area of the Turtle Creek Mall here in Hattiesburg Ms.

Some malls from where I am opt to have skylights. Not just for aesthetics but also for energy conservation.
