Now, not just "Yard" piddling but piddling of all kinds.

People like to celebrate Halloween in different ways; some provide eye-candy, others real candy, but Kurt likes to provide an alternative to candy. He likes to make up special handouts, different ones for boys or girls, and he includes a lot of stuff, such as small toys, comics, sports cards, etc, but no candy. The next day he goes around town, to hospitals or anywhere he can pass the leftover bags on to kids and he makes sure he makes enough to have leftovers. The second day is as much a tradition as the main day and he gets very worked up over the event, second only to Christmas. |

| … shoes! Don’t they go well with the pink socks? |
|
|
Jeanne has these shoes. She loves them. I love them. She gets a lot of compliments. They were bought for biking but she wears them even with no intention of riding a bike.
An aside: Riding a bike? Isn’t that redundant? With us? Reminds me of a story, i.e. joke, I read. An American visited England and when asked by her host what she would like to do she replied “I have really been looking forward to going horseback riding”. In a proper English accent her host replied “In England we just say ‘riding’, the horse is understood”.
They are very attractive shoes and when they wear out we will probably not be able to find new ones. In the midst of an inspiration I snuck (in the South it is snuck) off to WallMonkey, you know where I mean, and bought another pair to put in the closet for a later surprise. However, she saw me come in and had to know what I had and I had to show her for I had no choice. I earned a most sweet smile which left me wanting more but not for long.
Jeanne is a “got to know” kind of gal. She even has to know where I eat lunch and what I order. There are some places I can not eat without her, even when she is out of town. She will always ask when she returns and, of course, I can not lie to her, even by omission.

I’m thinking about forking this blog (”fork” - a programming term that means to spin off). I seem to be writing a lot about cycling which seems a reach from the original yard/family orientation. Maybe I need a riding blog; I already have a name, “recumbentrider.us”. Or, what about “bent.piddling.info”? Of course cycling is also a family activity so there would still be a little of that here. Humm. Thinking.
In the mean time: I thought I saw a lot of different animals while cycling on the Longleaf Trace, e.g. dear, squirrels rabbits, turkeys, and something really fast that was just a blur as it dashed across the road (as if trying to catch or running from something or just trying not to be seen). Well, here is a rider that has my adventures beat. Check out this recumbent adventure on Jim’s blog.

I finally worked in the yard yesterday. I cut the grass; most of it. I’ll do more this coming week; most likely. (Addendum: Thursday - not yet.)
I haven’t been in the yard much lately and the blog shows it. So does the yard, and well, I almost got fired. Jeanne said she was thinking about hiring someone. I don’t think so. When I retire that may be the only job I have. So I got my behind off the bike and out of the computer chair and went to work outside. Besides, I like working in the yard. It is just that I have been … ah … well it has been too … uh … let’s see, seems there was something. But that’s over and I’m sure I’ll have more time now. We don’t need no yard crew. Hey Jeanne, wanna go biking?
And these guys? These llamas? And the size of their yard! I bet they love it even if they do appear to look longingly over the fence. I bet they understand wanting more than just one good thing.
(A loner llama - wonder what he/she did to earn a timeout.)
They live adjacent to the Longleaf Trace and always seem to be interested when I go by; them and the emus they share the pasture with. I bet they read my blog. Yea, I bet they recognize me. Or maybe they are thinking “Look at that old guy on the funny bike”.
llamas have been in the Mississippi valley for a long time. They originated in the central plains of North America and migrated to South America and Asia about 3 million years ago. There are currently about 100,000 of them north of Mexico. Where could they all be hiding? Well from the picture I would say under shade trees in green pastures. What a life. You can read a little more about llamas on Wikipedia. You might even enjoy this llama song

| Some new "Klay Hawk" pieces are in at Calico Mall. Of this sampling I particularly like the center piece in the 1st photo/2nd row. |

There is also a new artist setting up in the gallery (new to Calico Mall). We bought the painting below and never mind that we have earth-tones in the family room and will now have to redecorate. |

| Jeanne made the selection but I like the painting too and I am sure I will like the second one she is considering. |

| … but just not all over. |

| 48 degrees this morning, not much warmer when we rode. My fingers were popsicles; I was already a pop-cycler. |

|
Both the bike and kurt. |
|
|
| Meet my new Rans Stratus XP. I picked it up in Jackson on 22 September and the next weekend rode it 82 miles. It felt really good and I could still walk afterwards; and I was not even sore the next morning. The smooth, sweet ride is the major difference between a recumbent and a wedgie bike.
It was my birthday ride, although not actually on my Oct 4th birthday (We often celebrate on a near day). Also, it was not the traditional “ride your age”, i.e. 65 years = 65 miles; the extra was some to grow on, I guess.
Anyway, look at me. Go ahead, click. Please. Do I look like I could not ride 82 miles. When I tell people I rode that far they get an instantaneous facial expression that says “unbelievable”. Pronounce that “Un–Believe–Able“. They recover quickly, but … damage done. Then when I tell them I have only been bent (i.e. recumbent) since summer, well, I could blow them over.
I know a secret. What I could never do on a regular bike I can do on a recumbent. And you can too. You don’t even have to be 65 years old and feisty. Check out recumbents on ebay |
| What has cycling done for me? Well, in the short time I have been bent my blood pressure is lower, e.g. often lower than 120/80, and my pulse is frequently in the 50’s, a couple of times recently at 48. And my sugar readings are lower. |
