Now, not just "Yard" piddling but piddling of all kinds.

First of all, “FireDog” is what Circuit City calls their tech people.
I went to Office Depot to get printer ink for me and price tags for Jeanne. Since it is next to Circuit City I decided to run by there also. I told myself that while there I could check on … well you’ll see.
I walked into Circuit City and before I got to anything interesting one of their techies approached and asked if he could help me. I replied something like “I guess not, I’ve already forgotten the excuse I made up to come by here.” I couldn’t understand his reply over the laughter and just walked on. Didn’t buy anything, so, I guess it wasn’t important.

happy birthday to me, happy bir..irth..day to meee, happy birthday to me. Saturday, 4 October, was my 66th. I told Jeanne I didn’t want a cake. She didn’t give in but she did compromise. You can read more about it at bentrider.info.

I thought we were buying a mattress but, boy, was I wrong. We bought a Jamison Latex Sleep System. (Not a commercial.)
Yesterday, I took a friend to an interview; Jeanne took kurt to an appointment or else she would have been with me. While waiting I sat in the car and read a science fiction I had already started. It was overcast, raining in spurts, but cool enough and very comfortable with the windows down in my van. Then it wasn’t, cool nor comfortable. Thanks to the tropical storm Fay the rain came in bands in their mad rush around the eye, which at this point was still east of us, maybe north east, and not as well-defined nor as angry as when it made landfall. So, the rain would blow in the windows and I would close them. It would get steamy warm and uncomfortable. The rain would stop and I would open the windows and the cycle would repeat.
Why didn’t I just start the engine and run the AC?
First: The battery-charging system is not right; maybe I’ve lost a rectifier in the alternator? I can get 4 or 5 starts on an outing and then it barely turns over (I’ve already changed out the battery with a free in-warranty replacement with no change in behavior , sorry Sam’s). I have a solar cell on the battery so after a bit I have a fresh charge, i.e. 4 or 5 more starts. I need to take it by the alternator shop for a free check up.
Second: The AC does not work. I took it to a shop and they could not find the location of the leak. They put marker-freon in it which should leave a stain at the leak’s location. (I actually have a freon detector which I may dig out yet; plus a vacuum pump, gages, etc. I’ve done a little AC work, replacing two outside units in the past. However, I’m trying to stop trying to do everything myself. After all, I’m retired, if not unemployed.) The marker has leaked out and I need to take the van back in. Maybe in my next retirement.
After about 45 minutes and during a storm lull I was aimlessly looking about and saw a mattress store Jeanne and I visited a year and a half ago. I was ready for a little diversity, so I walked over. I checked out a few mattresses with the owner and she explained the construction methods and the advantages of each. Even though she encouraged me I didn’t try any out since I was a little Fay and sweat wet. I told her I’d bring my wife by. I’m sure she thought “Yea, that’ll happen” as I walked back to the van through a light sprinkle.
I thought about how bad we needed a new mattress. Ours has a big hole, more like a sink-hole, right under my butt. What are the chances of that? I mean, the core could have failed anywhere but it was on my side, and right under my butt. I called Jeanne and she was on her way home from Kurt’s appointment. I told her about the sale at the place we previously visited. (I guess I failed to tell you about the sale. For example: the $5000 mattress, I mean sleep system, was marked down to about $2600. WOW) Yes, she would love to come and take a look. Such enthusiasm! You’d think the hole was on her side of the bed.
We didn’t buy before because the hole was just a slight indentation and we decided to get a side-board for the dinning room instead. So, as I said, I phoned Jeanne: I asked her to bring me a fresh shirt since in addition to being wet I was starting to smell a little like a wet puppy, which may actually be how wet old men smell. I also asked her to bring my billfold since I’d forgotten it. Retirement is tough.
I returned to reading, hoping Jeanne would arrive before my friend finished her interview. She didn’t; so I explained everything and moved the van closer to the mattress store in case Jeanne arrived in a rain cycle, and as a result of moving the van I used one of my cranks. As we waited I noticed the store owner getting into the car in the next slot. I opened my door, leaned way over and knocked on her car. She looked and I told her I had called my wife. She said that she had to run an errand but her husband would help us. He did, gave a great pitch, had been trained well (he explained that his wife was the expert). We tried several matresses, learned which model a famous 5-star hotel uses, and discovered my favorite, i.e. the expensive one. It felt really good, I mean “Really Good”. I asked the wife’s husband to turn out the lights (just joking) but he said he had done that before. Jeanne wanted to spend less, that’s my girl, but I pressured her and whispered in her ear that I wanted it . She gave in but I think she was happy, especially to be free of the guilt of the purchase. After all, we were going to spend the money on something, maybe something as mundane as van AC or alternator repair. And besides that, I didn’t really want a new bike this year anyway; believe it if you can.
Our friend joined Kurt and Jeanne in the car since the two of them had a 4 o’clock meeting which they were already late for and Jeanne would drop them off after picking up hamburgers for everyone. It’s a two hour group so they would easily catch up and the others would not eat without them. I went home and changed into drier clothes, all around, looking forward to when Fay stops her piddling and the mattress-store man-and-wife can have our new mattress delivered, “for FREE”, and the old one picked up, “for FREE”. I’m still trying to figure out how exactly it’s free.

Since family and friends read my blogs to keep tabs on me I have decided to post the following email excerpt. Most of what I write is in response to my correspondent’s comments or questions. Most all of these I have removed except for the trigger question. This question about being bored prompted me to give an example of my day. If a paragraph seems not to fit exactly in the stream of telling it may be because the transitions and lead-in have been removed; I’ve also done a little editing where I was unhappy with my hastily written email.
Quote (kind of)
I bet you get a little bored being newly retired.
Actually I could use a little boredom. I could use a few days to lean back and not do a thing. I have enough activities on my want-to-do queue to last several years. I haven’t lately done any electronics, personal programming, photography (other than casual picture taking), yard work (cutting the grass doesn’t count), etc. And it seems that everyone is trying to find things for me to do in my retirement (Having too much to do was one reason I retired). Well, maybe not everyone is trying to put me to work but most recently a friend tried to talk me into teaching community courses. Teach! I just retired from the University and I should immediately obligate myself to teaching? And then there are some of my long-standing web clients. So, I’m turning down work but giving in here and there. I’ll tell you a story.
I agreed to do a simple web site for a local business. i.e. Steelman’s Cajun Kitchen. So, I took some pictures and put up a concept page for them to look at. Their menu will eventually go into a database which will take a little longer to design and fill. Also I will need to take another picture after they cut the grass. Take a look: http://steelmanscajunkitchen.com/ and you will see that there is only one menu section and two items in it. As I said, "concept". Well, I went back by to give them the domain name (which I registered for them) and have them take a look (from home, no internet at work). The next time I went in to order (their $4.00 shrimp po-boy is exceptional, but I ordered fried rice for Jeanne and me), and the owner’s mother said "But there are only two items in the menu" and I said that they were the only two things I liked". She laughed and laughed; so much I could hardly get my order in.
Back: I interrupted the above about 10:30 to go to lunch with some old friends and some new ones. We went to a catfish house and then on to visit an assisted living home to see their furnishings, mostly antiques, some really nice and valuable pieces. Didn’t get home until about 4:00. Jeanne immediately started wrapping dolls for shipment and just now walked into the room announcing that she lost track of time and the Post Office is closed (it is now 5:45).
Ring: There’s Kurt calling for me to come get him, more when I get back.
Back: When we got home (from our earlier trip) Kurt said that Hudson’s had books on sale at 80% off and asked me to take him. I dropped him off and have just now returned from picking him up. We picked up po-boys at Cajun Kitchen on the way home. But before that, in the parking lot of Hudson’s we had a person approach us for $20. He said that he would have a place to stay for a month if he could come up with $20. So we went to talk to the woman at an apartment building that made the offer and ended up giving her the $20 (preferring to possibly be used than to ignore the call for help).
I didn’t ride today and you can probably see why. I’ll probably not ride tomorrow either. I want my mommy. We have to go to Camp Shelby in the morning to renew our ID’s (I’m retired military). Then we expect two of Jeanne’s sisters and one brother-in-law from the Villages in Florida by noon (One from the North is visiting the Other). They will spend the night then leave with my wife and hold her in captivity for a week. Then she will fly home.
Interruption: Jeanne just came in and got my cell phone since hers is running low on charge. She also got $10 since we used her twenty for the fellow in the parting lot. The ten is to buy an ice cream shake for her friend in a nursing home (it won’t cost $10) but first she will go by Fed Ex to mail the things that she was going to use Fed Ex for (they are open all night, not like the Post Office) and then to Sears and Kohls to exchange/return some things she bought for the trip. When she gets home maybe we will go to Blockbusters for a movie. I don’t know what I will do in the mean time. Maybe I will continue some web programming I started this morning. Or, tomorrow is going to be a little hectic, so maybe I should work on a list of things to do (Oh, I should remember to go to the credit Union and get Jeanne some money for the trip). Or, since I have written all this maybe I should put most of it on one of my blogs along with the pictures I took today at the assisted living place. I need to remember to put the pictures on a CD for our new friends(Frank and Helen); I said I would. And for our old friends too, Dorothy and Donald (they own the Calico Mall in Hattiesburg).
About Frank and Helen: He’s a Minister, she’s a web site designer so we had a lot to talk about. Talked with Frank about bike riding and he is interested; more than just interested, I think he wants to go for a ride to try a recumbent. I have a spare he can use, the BikeE. Maybe I was a little enthusiastic. Maybe a lot.
About Roy and Barbara: They own and run the assisted living place. He is a Minister also (retired I think). They provide an outstanding living accommodation for older people for a most remarkable $1600 a month. I was really impressed by the facility and the antiques. I’ll put the pictures on http://yard.piddling.info (the poor little forgotten blog).
Ring: That was the phone. It was one of those automated make-sure-someone-has-not-forgotten-their-appointment calls. It seems I have a doctor’s appointment tomorrow at 2:15. Glad they called.
You can find me on the internet. Go to Google. Click on images and Search on "Johnsey" (my last name). My picture should be on the first page. Or do a regular search on "Gary Johnsey"; you should find me. Also, I seem to own the word "piddling". Do a regular search and my yard blog should be the first link after the 2 or 3 dictionary-definition links.
I haven’t ridden for 2 days. Before that I rode for 8 days out of 10 for about 170 miles total. Does not look like I’ll get to ride tomorrow but my boss is going to be out of town for a week; ride, ride, ride.
When I came home from my last day of work I said: "I am now unemployed". Jeanne said: "You are retired. You are not unemployed".
>Unquote
Oh, by the way, Jeanne went by Blockbusters on her return from her run-about and we watched a little of a movie but it was too late, we were too tired, and the movie was just so-so. So, we went to bed.

| Watermelon sure tastes better than humble pie. |
|
|
Setup: I have an HP touch-screen laptop that came with the Vista operating system, but I don’t like it for a number of reasons. One is that it is a memory hog. 1 Gig of memory would be fine for another OS but it is the minimum you can get by with for Vista. You really need 2 Gigs to have enough memory for games and multiple apps. And, another complaint but nothing to do with Vista, if a laptop has 1 Gig preinstalled then it is most likely in the form of two 512 MByte sticks, using both memory slots. Cheaper that way, for them, but you have to replace both sticks to upgrade, i.e. can’t just add the extra.
|
|
Great deal: This week I ran across a great deal, $29 for 1 Gig of laptop memory. I ordered two sticks Monday and they arrived today. Over $200 worth of memory for about 60 bucks.
The idiot factor: This morning I unscrewed the memory-socket cover on the bottom of my newish laptop and guess what I saw plugged in, already plugged in. Not two 512 Meg sticks, but, wait; are you thinking “a 1 Gig stick and, so, Mr. Kada ordered one stick too many”? Well, no, not one too many! Mr. Kada ordered two sticks too many.
It must be my other laptop that could use some memory. Unfortunately, it uses the older “PC” style memory and what I just bought is “PC2″, so can’t use it there.
The birth of Mr. Kada: After thinking of myself as not exactly Mr. Know-it-all and can-do-it-all, i.e. Mr. Kada, I registered the domain name http://mrkada.com. I don’t know what I will do with it but registering it without plans for it seems exactly like the kind of thing a pretend Mr. Kada would do.

| The microwave won! |
|
|
| I was looking forward to a medium-paced, somewhat-long ride today on the trace. The temperature had been predicted to be in the 60’s, which it was. I really needed a ride, physically and mentally. I am about 70 miles behind the straight-line projection of 2500 miles for the year. But instead of a bike I got to ride this microwave up the wall, holding and pushing with one arm and screwing it to the top shelf with the other.
I went to make popcorn last night and all I got was arcs and sparks. Since there is no way we can go a day without a microwave we were off to Lowes this morning for a replacement. I don’t know which was more tiring, taking the old one down or putting the new one up. Had to drill all new holes of course and put up a new mounting bracket. My arms were so tired I could hardly lift them. Well, if my need was for exercise I guess the day was a success, but I prefer it on a bike. |

He had just gotten up and stumbled into the living room.
Me: "What’s wrong with your pants?"
He: "I probably put them on inside out and the seams are showing."
Me: "You need to look in the mirror." |

As soon as Jeanne saw me micro-adjusting the setting she said "I know what you are doing" and gave me a sweet little kiss as I ran off for the camera. She must like me celebrating her meals.
That was late in the day, now for a flash back
The day started and ended nicely but the middle was frustrating. In the morning the weather was beautiful. It was the kind of day that when you walked in the sun you could feel it penetrate, driving the tension from your body, a perfect day for a bike ride. I was wanting it, Jeanne was wanting it, and Kurt was especially wanting it as he had not been on the last couple of rides. I went out and unlocked three bikes for some pre-ride care which at least includes checking the air in the tires. I decided to do a little more than that on such a nice day.
|
|
Here is the Rocket in position for a chain oiling. You have to put some special oil on each individual link, and the chain is really long. The oil is extra thin in order to not easily collect lint and road ort. As you can see I used the bike-mobile’s rack as a bike stand. This was fun. I finished, positioned the bikes for easy access, and went in to collect the crew. |
The day morphed
Kurt was asleep and could not wake enough to ride. I wanted him to go but I’d also enjoy riding with just Jeanne. (We all understand the value of one-on-one and often arrange for all combinations of the three of us, two at a time. ) Jeanne was ready to go but wondered if we could run two small errands first. I agreed that they needed to be done and I locked the bikes back up.
Hammer number 1
First some background: Jeanne bought this painting from a local artist that needs framing (the painting, not the artist), actually bought two but the other she already framed (She found a cheap, old painting which she bought just for the frame). Jeanne took the unframed one to a shop a couple months ago and picked out a frame style she liked but the materials would have to be ordered. OK, she can wait. However, when she returned after the estimated delay she was told that the materials were backordered until February. This just isn’t fair. She wanted the painting in the frame for the season. OK, she can wait.
However, as she thought about it she realized she did not want to wait until February and wanted to select something in stock. The clear choice was not available so she wanted me to go also and help with the selection.
Enough of the background, back to yesterday, which was when we were both available with minimal inconvenience. I took the painting down form the wall and Jeanne and I head off to the frame shop. We got there well before they closed, well, before the sign on the door says they close. They must have had some small errands to run. Good for them but the look on Jeanne’s face! All the disappointments of waiting had instantaneously settled there. She looked like she wanted to choke a chicken. I patted her on the back, afraid to say the wrong thing, afraid to become a chicken.
Hammer number 2
We went on to a specialty shop to pick up/out a gift for Kurt. Jeanne had gone by before and the guy told her he had some better stock at home that he would bring in for her selection. Kurt is a good customer and he did not mind the extra trouble. As it turned out it was no trouble at all. He forgot. He went off to the stock room to see what he could find. I looked at Jeanne and she looked at me and we agreed that we didn’t want to select just from what he could find. We made arrangements to return Tuesday; they are closed Mondays. Just in case he forgets I think I’ll get Jeanne a rubber chicken for Christmas.
Hammer number 3
We returned home anticipating a well-deserved ride. I unlocked the bikes and we collected our gear. Kurt was still out like a light. I said that I had better check the weather (as I always do).
This is what I saw on the computer. It may have been clear and beautiful overhead but something evil was on the way. I was so dissapointed and Jeanne could tell. She said "Maybe we could ride just up to USM and back". That was no conlsolation to me and I declined. It would only be a 10 minute ride, one way, and would involve traffic, traffic lights, and hills. It would just be a tease, and not a good one at that. I locked the bikes back up. I really wanted this ride, not only for the good feeling of well-being it gives us but also because without it I may not make my 100 mile goal for the week. Actually it is not a goal, it is a test goal to see if I want to set it for 2008. (See my blog at bentrider.info.) Jeanne said she was sorry she delayed the ride but I reassured her it needed to be done. However, I think I should buy two rubber chickens, one for each of us.

I have a lot of tools and I like having them. So! Please don’t ask to borrow them as I will be anxious until they are returned.
Despite having her own tools Jeanne asked me today if I knew where a hammer was (I bought her her own tools long ago because I don’t want mine scattered throughout the house). I replied that I did not know where HER hammer was but I knew where MINE was. In a very shy voice she asked if she could use it. I said I wanted it put back and she said that it would be; giving me a look that meant how could I even think otherwise. I told her where my hammer was and she ran off as happy as she could be; leaving me standing there with the feeling I had just made a very big mistake. I will now have to find somewhere else to hide, I mean "put", my hammer. |
|
|
A little later I am walking through the kitchen and guess what I see.
I look for Jeanne and find her in the bathroom:
Me: Where is my hammer?
Jeanne: I’m still using it.
|
|
OK, I return to our house guests Jim and Janis, i.e. long-time friends from Texas.
Later we all go out to dinner with other friends and have a great time. When we come home I don’t see the hammer in the kitchen so I check to see if she put it up: Uh-oh, not there. |
| I find Jeanne in her dressing room.
Me: Where is my hammer?
She starts running toward the kitchen and I take off after her. She pauses at the kitchen bar, looks around, then:
Jeanne: I know where it is.
|
|
|
She dashes towards the dinning room but I catch her just before she reaches the table. I hold her hands, pinning her against my chest with one arm (felt good) while fishing the Casio out of my shirt pocket with the other and taking the picture, for evidence.
I release her; she grabs the hammer and heads for my tool closet, proving me wrong, i.e. that she would put the hammer back where it belongs.

I’m back and it is back to work, today; back to blogging tonight.
I don’t remember anything about what was going on at work before spring break. However, I do think this is advisement week, so, I’d better get in a little early. Reminds me of an old joke about civil servants (or any government employee such as myself — I teach at a state university):
Q: Do you know why they don’t give civil servants coffee breaks?
A: They would have to retrain them.
At least I use to think that was a joke.

During the day I am usually focused, thinking about the task at hand. However in my morning shower my mind wanders and it is my pleasure to see where it goes. Sometimes I create a short story, more like a scene from a short story, sometimes faux wisdom, sometimes a creative approach to a task, or maybe just a daydream where everyone likes me and thinks I am a neat old fellow. However, showers are not nearly long enough to exhaust the potential so occasionally I like to have a day where I mostly just sit or stroll in a quite room or in the yard and free my mind. Well, this morning it was just shower thoughts and they led to the following conversation in the kitchen. I entered, gave Jeanne a hug and a kiss, and asked her:
Me: Do you want to know the truth about truth?
Jeanne: What is it?
Me: You can’t trust it.
Jeanne: That’s true.

 |
… but before I even got off campus a shower showered.
Earlier, Jeanne said I could call and she would pick me up but I felt like walking and home is only 1 1/2 miles from work. So, as I said, when I started it was really nice and sunny; then the rain and it was still nice but nice and wet. |
| This very sweet student offered to share her umbrella but I was already wet so I just thanked her for her kindness. That’s her crossing the street.
I could have ducked into a building and called Jeanne but didn’t; I was in too much of a hurry. All this was earlier last week when Jeanne was getting ready for a trip and I needed to go by the credit union on the way home and get her some trip-cash, and it was 10 minutes until 4:00 which is when I thought they closed and I had time to walk the 3 blocks but probably not enough time to call Jeanne and have her come pick me up and still get there by 4:00; which I did with a few minutes to spare. (breathe) The teller expressed concerned when she discovered me wet but I just smilled when I discovered they didn’t close until 4:30.
With cash in pocket and with it now raining even harder I decided it was time to call Jeanne. I asked to use a phone - it didn’t work - I asked to use another one. Jeanne would be right there. I waited out front under the overhang and the rain sounded good. The cars passing by, splashing by, sounded good. It was great to be alive and I felt good, wet but good. When she pulled in I paused before darting to a door. Good thing. She slid over to the passenger bucket seat so I went to the driver’s side. She does not like to drive, in town, with me in the car; on a trip, OK. She says I make “suggestions”. Just once in a while, maybe. Not every time. Really. She says she knows they are for her own good (but yet she elects to forego them). Do any of you out there know me. You can tell me the truth, do I tend to profess too much. I mean I am a professor but am I guilty of instruction without tuition? |
